The highly acclaimed Sydney artist, Marion Borgelt, will have her first showing at Karen Woodbury Gallery from October 15 – November 15. Full Circle Red brings us visually spectacular works that explore the duality and ever-shifting power dynamics of nature and the universe, through a journey between two and three-dimensional works. This exhibition introduces several new series of works that capture a fresh interplay of movement and colour using a fluid, organic approach to form and shape.
Inspired by the artist’s recollection of a song by Van Morrison – a meld between jazz and rock– the large tableau Moondance extends the artist’s preoccupation with the light, effects and mood of a lunar mise en scène where shapes float and dance in an eerie, evening twilight.
Full Circle Red harks back to works of the early 2000’s where the artist explored the play of light and refraction, often using brilliant red that would cast faint rose-coloured shadows onto the host wall. Assembled in a grid each of the 16 pieces in this new work has its own individual character randomly twisted and curled within the constraints of a 244cm length of laminated material.
The full, mesmerizing effect of the cut canvas works in the Liquid Light series is only evident when the viewer moves around the work, this movement itself evoking the orbits of the planets. The fine, intricate strips are cut in such a way that with every incremental movement, the image shifts and changes.
Overall, there is a new level of technical development and visual complexity to this exhibition. Underpinned by her familiar themes Borgelt takes the works in Full Circle Red to new, sophisticated levels of mastery where a synthesis between construction and concept is harmoniously achieved.
