Tsukimi Series (Duck Eggshell)

Moonlight Tsukimi

I am fascinated by the nature of time and how it governs our lives and the universe we live in. In the natural world the passage of time is predominantly characterised by the existence of cycles and repetition where one phase or stage of a living, dynamic entity metamorphoses into another. I have created many …

Strobe Series

The Strobe works are abstract large-scale paintings referencing waves of bending, twisting light whose vivid bands of colour are a contrast to the subtlety of Borgelt’s earlier work. The rich, intense hues bring a drama to Borgelt’s oeuvre while keeping true to the artist’s ever-present concern with exploration of optical effects. The foundation of this …

Lunar

Lunar Circle No. 4

The moon has a powerful allure, brimming with beauty, legend and myth. Its constant presence reminds us of the heavenly bodies beyond our own planet, the vastness of our solar system and the timeless nature of the world we live in. As it orbits the earth, the moon seemingly changes appearance due to its position …

Liquid Light

Liquid Light 56 Degrees

Just like the changing light from morning to nightfall of any day, the Liquid Light works change with the viewer’s movements, each one opening and closing like the pupil of an eye. Every degree of movement reveals yet another image where the game between artwork and viewer endlessly unfolds. ______________________________________________________________________________ ‘A return to the painted …

2009 Moonlight in my Veins

Dominik Mersch Gallery
30 April – 6 June, 2009

Marion Borgelt’s solo exhibition, Moonlight In My Veins, presents a number of new paintings, sculpture and installation works; each providing sensory encounters with light, colour and materials.

These include recent pieces from Borgelt’s Liquid Light series, which are cut canvasses, with areas of the pigmented reverse of the canvas twisted and revealed. This twisting creates a shifting surface of light and colour that changes with the angle from which the work is viewed. A large-scale Liquid Light work was recently commissioned for the hotel lobby of the ‘City of Dreams’ in Macau.

There are also new paintings from Borgelt’s vibrantly coloured and dynamic Strobe Series. Another commission for the flagship Mirvac building, 101 Miller Street, in North Sydney was also recently completed.

Borgelt’s sculptural installation pieces: Moonlight Tsukimi (Japanese Moon Viewing ceremony), Lunar Circle and Lunar Warp, are the quieter and more subtle works in the exhibition. Again, the play of light across their surfaces features strongly, but these works also clearly evoke themes recurrent in Borgelt’s practice. According to Rod Pattenden, they allude to the sequential measure of time and evoke the orbits of the moon or planets. He adds, ‘Borgelt’s objects visualize or map the unseen but quintessential influences of the celestial bodies on our own sense of space and being.’
